A Big Ol’ Lil’ Bit About Me

Pablo Rubio was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the suburb of Mesquite.

After encouragement from his teachers at Mesquite High School, Pablo decided to study English at Richland College, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in December 2015.

Pablo then received an invitation to study at Texas A&M University in January 2016 and studied English until May 2018; he graduated cum laude and received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

His fiction writing and occasional poetry is largely based on his personal experiences as a young, Spanishless, type-1 diabetic Chicano in the towns of Mesquite and College Station.

For his work, Pablo received the Charles Gordone Award in Undergraduate Fiction from Texas A&M in April 2018. His creative writing instructor, Dr. Lowell Mick White, submitted the award-winning story, “The Legacy of Queso Champ,” on Pablo’s behalf to the Student Creative Writing Awards—a contest hosted by the Texas Association of Creative Writing Teachers. The story won again and Pablo received the Best in Undergraduate Fiction Award for Short Story in July 2018.

He hopes to publish a collection of short stories and continue his study of creative writing in graduate school.
